Bbc Accent Poll Results

BBC Accent and Poll results -

Aims
The BBC voices polls purpose was to  find out how exactly people feel about certain accents and language across Britain, over 5000 people took part in this poll, expressing their views on how pleasant or unpleasant they found certain accents.

Findings
One of the common features of the feedback that i noticed from the results were, that different regional areas preferred similar accents to their own.
The main purpose of this being, because they understood the dialect and language more for example,Scots said they loved Ewan McGregor's Perthshire accent and people in Wales preferred listening to Welsh actor Richard Burton. The most popular accent was in-fact the scottish accent, Suave Scot Sean Connery scottish accent scoring very high ratings within all of the uk.  Quite unusual accents scored high as well, bond actor Pierce Brosnan who was originally born in Ireland and has moved the America for over 20 years now has a developed unusual accent which Britain seems to love. Sir Trevor Mcdonald also scored very with him being orginally from Trinidad, he was said to have a very demanding, loud voice making him very easy to listen to hence why his job suits his accent very well.

Analysis
i think that the results that were found were very regional bias, they state how people preferred accents near them, which in someways is understandable as the dialect and language would be alot easier for them to understand, however a criticism to their feedback it only states what region prefers what accent, rather than consider age, gender, or race.

Conclusion
To conclude all of this, the research and results all show that depending on where exactly you live in the uk, depends on what you think is the most 'pleasant', age, race or gender are not really involved in your judgement or at least this isn't what the results are showing us.

  1. A good comment re the lack of recognition of other possible social factors influencing perception such as age or gender. Next tie you should write about the methodology used in more detail and evaluate this too.
